The Aire Valley Leeds regeneration area contains 400 existing businesses employing around 15,000 people, concentrated in traditional industrial centres at Cross Green and Hunslet/Stourton, with a focus on the manufacturing, wholesale and distribution, print/packaging and food preparation sectors, as well as some heavier industrial/aggregate operations. More recent developments have introduced offices and services in business park and waterfront locations. The area also contains a range of large development sites with the potential to accomodate up to 27,000 new jobs over the next 10-15 years, making a major contribution to the growth and prosperity of the city and the wider region.
A key objective of the regeneration programme is to ensure local residents have maximum access to vacancies in existing companies and to new jobs attracted to the area. Since the start of the regeneration programme, the Aire Valley Employment Access Team has assisted over 1,100 people into employment in the area, with around 53% of these from the neighbourhoods of inner East, inner North east and inner South Leeds.
The Employment Team is a partnership between the Council's Jobs & Skills Service and Jobcentreplus which provides assistance for jobseekers and employers both directly and by signposting to other providers.
Employer Support
The Aire Valley Employer Support Team will work closely with local businesses to help solve recruitment problems and develop a committed and skilled workforce. The team will:
- Work with local candidates prior to interview offering 1-2-1 support with pre-employment training
- Offer free use of interview space/open day venues across the city
- Develop customised training so you can recruit candidates that meet your required standards
- Arrange work trials/placements allowing local people to gain the valuable experience you can offer
- Help you access grants available to support your business
Partnership arrangements are also in place with Jobcentre Plus regarding vacancy notification and other support; Aire Valley vacancies notified to Jobcentre Plus are also entered on the Aire Valley Leeds website and circulated to local job shops and community venues.
